On July 25, 2018, I was privileged to be a part of an International Conference on Roll Scanning. Roll scanning is the process of taking a standard player piano roll, and "scan" it on a special device that will allow me to make a digital MIDI file. This file can then be played on any musical device that can read MIDI 0 or MIDI 1 files. My piano is capable of doing that. The device is simple to use. Just load the piano roll like you would on any player piano. The machine will show the scan on the computer as it progresses in real time. When the scan is completed, I will save it as a standard MIDI file. I then reroll the paper roll and when the rewind is complete, I am ready to scan another roll. The time it takes, is the same as it does to select a roll, play the roll on a player piano, and rewind the roll when it is finished playing. That is about 3 minutes to 15 minutes, depending on the length of the song on the roll. I will need to build the machinery, and when I have some photos of what the scanner will look like, I will post them.

Dear friends!
It is my pleasure to announce the official launching of The St. Louis Ticklers! We are an authentic 1900's Ragtime band specializing in classical Ragtime works ranging from the major composers to the obscure. We are proud to be carrying on the proud heritage and tradition of syncopated music that this wonderful city was once so famous for! I'm especially proud of the personnel making up the ensemble, as I feel they are the very best at what they do. The St. Louis Ticklers are:
Sam Golden - Violin
Timothy John Muller - Banjo
Jon Weiss - Tuba
Christopher Parrish - Piano, Director, Arranger
Standby for all our events and performances!
Yours for Ragtime,
Christopher Parrish

Friday night in my old natural habitat - the Diamond Belle Saloon in Durango, Colorado. If there are any bloopers - well, it's an old piano, and that's what is at fault. Enjoy this as long as it stays connected. Constructive comments welcome. Sorry, won't be doing requests this time around, but maybe next week if this works out.

Bill Edwards, Ragtime Piano Humor
Even a century ago, we just got NO respect as ragtime players. (From a Washington, DC paper of 1916).
I have enlarged the text under the cartoon so you can get the idea what the cartoonist was trying to convey. UPPER PICTURE: "HA," says the professor, "Just the place for my studio of high class music." Of course we "know" the professor is making a reference to Ragtime music. LOWER PICTURE "Thirty days later..." Note the 3 For Rent signs in the adjoining apartments. Written under FOR RENT: in #1 CHEAP, in #2 REDUCED and in #4 no comment. There is a piano burning outside to the right.
Dennis James and Robert Milne, In The Adirondacks
I drove 250 miles on up to the Adirondacks this past weekend to see & hear my Barrelhouse/Boogie-Woogie pianomeister friend Bob Milne play a program on what he terms a PSO. In gigster-journeyman-pianah player terms, the PSO is a “Piano Shaped Object”. I’ll leave it to your imagination what Bob’s own PSO description translates to concerning having to play a sad spinet Steinway with a sticky note on a VERY humid afternoon!
Robert Milne My name is Bob Milne, and I approve of this message. And PSO. At least it made it through the gig. Well, almost. “E” above middle “C” went out on the last tune when the hammer turned to a 45 degree angle. It rendered an, uh, interesting sound to The Entertainer. Check out the video above. Please note the audience on the porch and the audience just inside the porch. At least SOME of the audience was not sleeping (especially the ones with antlers).
